Using Gemini Gems on WearOS

Gemini Gems are specialized AI assistants customized for specific tasks like fitness coaching, writing help, or productivity management. You can access these focused assistants directly from your WearOS watch for targeted help throughout your day.

What Are Gemini Gems

Gems are customized versions of Gemini with specific instructions, knowledge, and personality traits optimized for particular use cases.

  • Task-Focused Design: Each Gem is optimized for specific activities. A Fitness Trainer Gem understands workout terminology and motivation techniques, while a Writing Assistant Gem focuses on composition and editing.

  • Custom Instructions: Gems follow specific guidelines that shape their responses. A Learning Coach explains concepts step-by-step, while a Productivity Helper keeps responses brief and actionable.

  • WearOS Adaptation: Gems on WearOS prioritize voice responses over text since you're interacting from a small screen, often hands-free.

Accessing Gems on Your Watch

You can activate specific Gems through voice commands or the Gemini app interface.

  • Voice Activation: Say Hey Google, talk to my Fitness Trainer Gem or Activate my Writing Assistant. Use the exact Gem name you configured.

  • App Selection: Open the Gemini app on your watch, swipe to see available Gems, and tap to activate one for your current session.

  • Quick Switching: During a conversation, say Switch to my Productivity Gem to change assistants without starting over.

  • Default Gem: Set a default Gem in Gemini settings on your phone. This Gem activates automatically when you start Gemini on your watch.

These Gem types work particularly well on smartwatches due to their voice-friendly, action-oriented responses.

  • Fitness Trainer: Provides workout guidance, rep counting, motivation, and form cues during exercise. Say Start my upper body workout or How many calories did I burn.

  • Productivity Helper: Manages quick tasks, reminders, and scheduling. Say Add milk to my shopping list or What's my next meeting.

  • Travel Companion: Offers local recommendations and navigation help. Say Find coffee shops nearby or How do I say thank you in Japanese.

  • Learning Coach: Explains concepts and answers educational questions. Say Explain photosynthesis simply or Quiz me on Spanish vocabulary.

Creating Custom Gems

You can create personalized Gems on your phone or computer that sync to your watch.

  • Phone Setup: Open Gemini on your Android phone, go to Settings Gems Create new Gem. Define the name, personality, and instructions.

  • WearOS Optimization: When creating Gems for watch use, include instructions like "Keep responses under 30 seconds" and "Prioritize voice delivery."

  • Sync to Watch: Custom Gems automatically sync to your watch when signed into the same Google account. Allow a few minutes after creation.

  • Testing: Test new Gems on your watch before relying on them. Some complex instructions may not translate well to voice-only interaction.

Limitations on WearOS

Some Gem features work differently or have restrictions on smartwatches.

  • Visual Features: Gems that generate images, charts, or formatted text display poorly on watch screens. These features work better on phone or computer.

  • Long Conversations: Extended Gem conversations drain battery quickly. Keep interactions focused and brief on your watch.

  • Complex Processing: Gems with intensive analysis or multi-step reasoning may respond slower on watch hardware.

  • Feature Availability: Not all Gems available on other platforms work on WearOS. Google continues expanding compatibility.
