How to Set Up Gemini Assistant on Your Smartwatch

Setting up Gemini on your smartwatch requires meeting specific technical requirements and proper configuration on both your Android phone and watch. The system is being gradually released wherever the Gemini mobile app is available.

Requirements Before Setup

Essential Prerequisites:

  • Android Device Connection: Must be connected to an Android phone
  • Wear OS Version: Smartwatch running Wear OS 4 or later (Wear OS 6 includes enhanced brand app support)
  • Compatible Brands: Available on watches from Pixel, Samsung, OPPO, OnePlus, and Xiaomi
  • Language and Region: Gemini must be available in your language and region
  • Primary Assistant: Gemini must be set as your digital assistant on the connected phone

Step-by-Step Installation

Step 1: Set Gemini as Default Assistant - On your Android phone, open the Gemini mobile app and follow the prompts to make Gemini your primary digital assistant. This replaces Google Assistant as the default and enables smartwatch functionality.

Step 2: Install Gemini on Watch - On your smartwatch, tap the screen or press a button to wake it, then open the App menu and tap Gemini. If Gemini isn't installed, download it through the Play Store on your watch. The app may not be available immediately due to gradual rollout.

Step 3: Complete Setup Process - Follow the setup instructions displayed on both your watch and paired phone. The setup process will configure the connection between devices and enable voice interaction capabilities.

Step 4: Configure Voice Activation - If using "Hey Google" activation, verify that Voice Match is properly configured on your phone. To control this on your watch, go to Settings → Google → Digital assistant → "Hey Google" to turn detection on or off.

Step 5: Test Basic Functions - Try simple commands like "Set a timer for 5 minutes" or "What's my step count?" to verify the connection is working. The smartwatch communicates with your phone's Gemini app to execute these commands.

Important Notes

The smartwatch inherits permissions and app connections from your phone's Gemini setup, so ensure connected apps like fitness trackers are properly configured on the mobile device first. Advanced features like email integration and calendar management require enabling these services in your phone's Gemini Apps settings.
